Turn It Up

Okay, I’m driving down the road and you know it —- the song that comes on and you just have to TURN IT UP!!!  I’ve had a couple of those in the past weeks.  Remember, I’m a country girl and you’re going to have to go back to the archives for these 2.

Anybody at my wedding should remember this one—Rhinestone Cowboy by Glen Campbell.  Somebody at my wedding had this song played as Kimmer’s favorite song when she was a little girl (I still blame my dad) and all of the little girls and boys at our wedding came and joined me on the dance floor.  Oh what a memory that is, so how can I NOT sing along and I still remember all of the words!

The other one was John Denver’s, Take Me Home County Roads.  That song just simply reminds me of childhood and  singing at the top of my lungs.

And of course, my kids looked at me like I was crazy!

Happy 11th Mitchell

My nephew Mitchell is 11 today.  It’s fun to be able to talk to him and say, I remember the night you were born, I remember feeding you and of course telling him that I used to change his diaper.  Mitch, we hope you’re having a great day and have a great year being 11.

This is the first family birthday we will miss (and we missed Jessi’s—she let us know, too).  I have to say this is one thing that will be hard as we are so many miles away.  I always did my best to make all the family birthday’s b/c family is important and to now know this is the first of many parties we will miss makes me a little weepy!

Anyway, as I was looking back through my archives I noticed Mitchell got the very first birthday wish on my blog and from there it went downhill.  I barely recognized anyone else’s birthday, so I resolve to do a better job of that this year.

Dad’s Day – Looking Forward!

Here we are again, I have gotten permission to continue with this “Sunday Edition” for a while longer. Thank you for all the positive posts, I will try to keep each post new and interesting. This week I stuggled with what to write about. I decided to touch on a subject that everyone seems to be avoiding….I am missing Michigan!

I know that everyone in this house feels the same as me, but they either don’t know how to express it or they don’t want to open that box of emotions. Well, the fact is that I miss it everyday. Kim was looking through a bunch of pictures on her computer this weekend with the kids and I looking over her shoulder. It brought back many great memories. I would like to share a few of the things I miss with you in pictures…

I also miss my family members, the Tharp family, our home on 206 James Rd (epecially the HUGE backyard and garage), large shade trees, sub 100 degree temperatures, the list goes on and on and on.

I know your looking back at the title of this blog and wondering “has he been drinking?” The answer is yes, Diet Coke. I have brought all this up because as I was looking back on these memories, I couldn’t help but look forward to the memories we will make in our new home.

Our new Home

Our new Home

As I’ve sat here and described some of the things I miss about Michigan, I am also filled with things I look forward to in Texas. I have to admit, these are exciting times, August will signal the start of many things: Shealyn’s softball season, Carter’s football season and the first day of school, to name a few. I know our new house doesn’t have the history of our Houghton Lake home, but it will! We are finally together as family and memories are being made daily that will one day fill many scrapbooks.

Kids Say the Darndest or CUTEST Things

The other day we were driving to swim lessons when this conversation took place with Carter

C—mom, I can spell mouse

M—okay, go for it

C— M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E

(okay, I know you’re all singing the song in your head or maybe even out LOUD)

M—Oh, where does mouse start?

C—the 2nd M

Isn’t this how we all learned to spell MOUSE?  And just for fun—what’s the next line?

A fun visit

Yesterday, the kids and I went to Fort Worth to visit with my cousin and her girls.  Beth and I were discussing how long it’d been since we had seen each other and we decided on 3 years, but it’s been way longer than that since we’ve been able to have any kind of discussion.  We arrived just after lunch and after a few minutes of awkwardness (with the kids only) they were off in the other room playing with the kittens, computer and whatever else they could find.  Before I knew it, 2 hours had gone by and the kids were coming in pretty much insistent that it was time to swim NOW!  So, we got everybody sunscreened and enjoyed another couple hours in the pool.  While staying cool in the pool and watching the kids, Beth and I visited more and just had fun watching our kids play together.  It really was a great afternoon and so nice to catch up with my cousin.  Hopefully, we can do it again before school.  Thanks Beth and girls for the cool, relaxing afternoon!

Best Shot Monday

My best shot Monday is of P. doing her “trick” on the trampoline.  You can tell by the picture that she has a pretty intent look on her face—-well it’s because she’s watching herself in the window.  That is one of her favorite things to do (watch herself)!

Dad’s Day – Sunday Edition

As it has been through past generations, Sunday is the day that Dad’s rule. I remember growing up that Sunday was the day to look forward to for several reasons. That was the day that Dad made breakfast!!! I can still remember the excitement of waking up to the smell of french toast (what is it with Dad’s and french toast anyway?) and bacon knowing that after church (Mom’s only stipulation of the day) that it was going to be a wonderful, adventure of a day. Sometimes we would go to the lake, sometimes we would just hang out and watch football on TV. Other times, we would go try new and exciting things. This is a tradition that I am trying to continue with my children.

This Sunday, being my first blogging experience, I will be talking about the week of FIRSTS that the McNulty’shave experienced. It has been shared with you that Shealynand Carter are both able to do a “half flip” on our trampoline. Well, Shealynhas done it!!! After working with her for the last 3 weeks, she finally flipped and landed on her feet. We have the event documented on video, but have yet to become technically proficient enough to post it on this website. We are therefore going to post the picture below that shows her landing.

And she Sticks the Landing!

And she Sticks the Landing!

She continued to practice and got better and better. What a great accomplishment for her!

Mr Carter has also learned how to do a flip and Miss P is learning all kinds of new stuff including the splits!

When I asked Miss P to show off her moves this is what I got…

The other “first of the week” was swimming lessons. Shealyn, Carter and Miss P have all graduated from their first swimming lesson. First of all, none of the kids knew how to swim on their own prior to this lesson. We have always taken them to the beach where they rarely went in past chest deep. The only other exposure to water was when they went to Uncle Mike and Aunt Donna’s house during the summer and hangin out in their pool.

Lets start with the “Divine Miss P”. She would not enter the water without a life jacket unless she had a death grip on an adult, preferably her mother. Her instructors name was Carrie and was absolutely wonderful. Payton’s confidence level in the water has grown by leaps and bounds.

The only downfall of this new-found confidence is that she is sometimes too eager to show it off. As soon as we get her to make sure that an adult is ready before she jumps, everything will come together nicely. She will be taking another round of lessons starting this week.

On to Mr Carter….he is improving and can swim on his own for short distances. His instructor’s name is Lindsay and she was also wonderful. There was one day that Carter was the only one in the class and I believe this was the best day of his lesson. Being in a class with 3 other kids was a little distracting for him so we decided to enroll him a weeks worth of private lessons with Lindsay and we’ll see how he does. The good news is that he passed level two!

Now, on to the Gert. I was very impress impressed with the way she took to the water. She has always been sort of a daredevil, be it in the water or out. And to prove it, I have dug into the archives for solid, visual proof.

Her instructor’s name was Nick. He had a huge class, and the students were all at different levels. This was a little frustrating because Shealyn didn’t get a lot of 1 on 1 time, but she took off from day one!

On a final note, yesterday was sign-up day. Kimmer and I loaded up the kids and headed off to sign-up the two oldest for sports. Shealyn picked softball, not a huge suprise. Carter, however, did not pick baseball or soccer (the two sports he has played before). Instead, drumrole please……

HE CHOOSE TO PLAY FOOTBALL!!!!!!!

Let me say that again, MY SON WANTS TO PLAY FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!

I know what some of you ladies are thinking, and you are wrong! That’s right, you are wrong. If my son had told me that he didn’t want to play football, I would be fine with that. I feel the effects football had on my body every morning as I try to get out of bed. But I hope that it will create a common ground for us to share. I hope that he enjoys the game as much as I did, and I will help him along the way if he wants me to.

This concludes my very first post. Looking back on the experience, I rather enjoyed it and will continue posting on Sundays if I am allowed to. What do you think? Let me know.

A new contributor is lurking…

and soon to find his way to the blog.  Clark informed me last week that I’m not blogging enough (okay I’m not) so he wants to blog on Sunday’s!  I’m all for it!  So, look for it!  Oh yeah, Clark, now it’s out there so you gotta do it.  Stay tuned.

Kids say the darndest things

Okay, my friend Carrie has done a couple Friday editions of these and I just can’t resist anymore.  I have to get these down b/c someday I will forget theise cute little stories (although I swear I thought I would forget nothing my kids did).

Last week Shealyn and Payton were taking a bath in my tub (it’s a big garden tub).  So, you can definitely get enough water in it to make it feel like a small swimming pool.  And as I was taking care of clothes and meandering in and out this is what I hear:

P–watch out Shealyn, I’m going in for a dump!!

Edit*** Guess what “dump” is referred to in our house? :o )

3 hours later and 3 hungry kids

Yesterday, Clark and I took on the task of registering our vehicles and getting Texas licenses.  Let me tell you —- it’s a big deal down here.  Maybe it’s because I’ve only ever lived in 1 state and maybe most states now require all of this to get licensed in their state, but geez lousise!

*first you have to pass a state emmisions test to even get your vehicle registered

(mine passed–Clark’s did not b/c of a parking brake he has NEVER used, therefore he cannot register his vehicle until the problem is fixed—oh yeah it’s not a cheap fix either)

*then you have to take the certificate that states your vehicle passed to the tax building to register it

This was going well until we discovered we had to have ouir insurance declaration page faxed to the tax office to prove we carried enough coverage for Texas standards.  Fortunately we were able to get ahold of customer service and they immediately faxed it over and yes we had plenty of coverage.  So, $200 and 40 minutes later my vehicle is officially registerd in Texas and now will bear Texas plates.  And we’re off———–to the next stop.

*next you have to go to DPS to wait in that line and get your driver’s license

So there we stand for an hour or so with our applications, old driver’s licenses, birth certificates and social security cards.  Oh, yeah the kids are being really good, but definitely getting antsy.  So anyway, it’s my turn—I give her all of my stuff, pass the eye exam, get finger printed, sign a piece of paper and my license will be on the way.  However, the same was not true for Clark.  We didn’t have his birth certificate in posession, but we had a hospital certificate—-no, nada, didn’t work.  So, hopefully we can figure out where his birth certificate is (hopefully his mom has it) if not we’ll be ordering a new one so we can be Texans together.

Anyway, between the driving, paperwork, and waiting this whole process took 3 hours yesterday!  Daddy did a little bribing and told the kids if they were good he would treat them.  He stood true to his word—he treated us to Chinese for lunch!   Sure beats PB & J!!!
